International Safety Media Awards
The International Safety Media Awards recognise safety promotion and injury prevention media from around the world. They have been part of the World Health Organization's Safety conferences since 2006. The 8th awards were presented at Safety 2022 on Wednesday 30 November; the 7th had been presented at the 2021 virtual showcase.
What the awards are
The International Safety Media Awards, usually shortened to ISMA, give safety promotion and injury prevention professionals a way to put their media work in front of an international audience and to be judged on it. The conference site described them as recognising high quality safety media from around the world and as a way to strengthen multi-sectoral partnerships and share current practice across borders.
The awards have been part of the World Health Organization's Safety conferences since 2006, when the series met in Durban, South Africa. They were started by the Center for Safe Alaskans, which continued to run them: entries and enquiries went to Marcia Howell of Safe Alaskans and Barbara Minuzzo. Safe Alaskans exhibited at Safety 2022 and also ran a conference workshop on building a media campaign evaluation plan. The awards keep their own site at isma-awards.org, where winning entries and interviews with the judges are published.
The site said that at the previous conference more than 600 pieces of media were submitted, from every continent except Antarctica.
The 8th International Safety Media Awards, 2022
Entries for the 8th awards closed on 27 March 2022, the same day as the extended abstract deadline. The winners were pre-announced over lunch on Wednesday 30 November, the last day of Safety 2022, and presented in the conference closing session by Marcia Howell of Safe Alaskans.
The 7th International Safety Media Awards, 2021
The 7th awards were presented at the Virtual Pre-Conference Global Injury Prevention Showcase in March 2021, and the conference site carried a page of the winning entries. That page listed the award categories and embedded each winning piece of media; it did not print the names of the winning works or the organisations behind them, and the embedded media did not survive in the archived copy. The categories were:
- ISMA Short Video Gold Award
- ISMA Ultra Short Video Gold Award
- ISMA Website Gold Award
- ISMA Print Gold Award
- ISMA Campaign Gold Award
- ISMA Special Merit Award
