National Farm Safety and Health Week
National Farm Safety and Health Week falls in the third week of September, as the United States harvest gets under way. Farm families, co-operatives, extension services and rural fire departments use it to talk about tractor and roadway crashes, grain bin entrapment, confined spaces, farmer health and stress. Agriculture is still the most dangerous industry in America, and most of those deaths involve people who work alone.
The organiser has not announced the next dates. This page will carry them as soon as National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS) publishes them.
When it falls
Dates are announced by the organiser each year.
- Farm Safety and Health Week 2026 — 21–25 September 2026 Confirmed
- Farm Safety and Health Week 2025 — 21–27 September 2025 Confirmed
Also known as: NFSHW, Farm Safety Week.
Where it came from
National Farm Safety and Health Week was started by the National Safety Council and has been proclaimed by every sitting United States president since Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944. It is placed in the third week of September because fall harvest is one of the busiest and most dangerous stretches of the farming year. The week is now led by the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety, the National Safety Council's agricultural partner, which sets a theme and runs free webinars on a daily topic.
First observed in 1944.
How organisations mark it
- Register for the free NECAS daily-topic webinars and watch one a day with the whole farm crew.
- Check lighting, markings and slow-moving vehicle emblems on every machine that goes on the road.
- Agree a written rule that nobody enters a grain bin while equipment is running, and stick to it.
- Run a first aid and emergency plan check: who is called, from where, and how they find you.
- Use the health and wellness day to talk openly about stress, fatigue and where to get help.
