Baby Safety Month
Baby Safety Month runs through the whole of September in the United States. The Baby Safety Alliance, the manufacturers' body formerly known as JPMA, uses it to show parents, grandparents, carers and retailers how to choose and use cots, car seats, carriers, high chairs and other baby gear safely. It is aimed at families with a baby on the way or a child under two.

When it falls
The whole of September, every year.
- Baby Safety Month 2027 — 1–30 September 2027 Expected
- Baby Safety Month 2026 — 1–30 September 2026 Confirmed
Also known as: Baby Safety Awareness Month, BSM.
Where it came from
The campaign began in 1983, when the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association created Expectant Mother's Day to teach parents how to choose and use baby gear safely. It grew into a week in 1986 and in 1991 JPMA ran the first Baby Safety Awareness Month; September has carried it ever since. JPMA now trades as the Baby Safety Alliance, which runs the month with its member companies, partner organisations and volunteer ambassadors.
First observed in 1991.
How organisations mark it
- Check every piece of baby gear in the house against the manufacturer's instructions and register it for recall notices.
- Run a safe-sleep check: firm flat mattress, baby on the back, nothing loose in the cot.
- Book a car seat check with a certified technician before the baby comes home.
- Use the month's toolkit in antenatal classes, health visits and retail staff briefings.
- Share the year's campaign messages with new-parent groups instead of unverified advice from social media.
