Suicide rate by country
The World Health Organization’s estimates for 185 countries in 2021, ranked from the highest age-standardized rate to the lowest. Each row also gives the rate for males and for females, the rate in 2000 and the crude rate.
What this measures
Deaths by suicide in a year for every 100 000 people, as estimated in WHO’s Global Health Estimates for 2000 to 2021. The table is ranked by the age-standardized rate: WHO applies each country’s rate for each age group to one standard population, so that a country is not placed higher or lower only because its population is older or younger. The crude rate, the number of suicide deaths divided by the whole population and multiplied by 100 000, is shown beside it. Where a country has a high-quality death registration system, WHO starts from the deaths it registers and adjusts for under-reporting and for deaths with an unclear cause. Where it does not, WHO estimates from other sources, such as household surveys, sample registration systems and special studies. WHO uses the same categories and definitions for every country so the figures can be compared, and says plainly that they may not match a country’s official national figures.
How to read the table
- These are WHO’s modelled estimates, made with the same definitions for every country so that countries can be compared. They are not the deaths a country registers itself, and they often differ from national statistics; the national figures we carry are on the violence & self-harm injury facts page.
- A figure in brackets is WHO’s uncertainty range: the interval WHO gives for where the true value is likely to lie. Where two countries’ ranges overlap, their order in the table may not be a real difference.
- The rank is a country’s position in this list, highest age-standardized rate first. Countries whose rates print the same are listed alphabetically.
- Compare countries with the age-standardized rate. Set the crude rate beside a country’s own statistics, which are usually crude rates.
- WHO revised its methods and input data for this edition of the estimates, and says they should not be compared with estimates it published earlier.
